AR Treasure Hunt at Rock in Rio Lisbon, Developed with Cipta Dua Saudara and Stellar Inti Studio

Overview

AR Treasure Hunt at Rock in Rio Lisbon, Developed with Cipta Dua Saudara and Stellar Inti Studio

Katch to Win is the augmented reality treasure hunt Katchit ran at Rock in Rio Lisbon 2024. Festivalgoers searched the venue for digital items in AR on their own phones, collected them to unlock achievements, and redeemed them for real prizes at partner brand stands. Javapixa developed it together with Cipta Dua Saudara and Stellar Inti Studio; Katchit is the studio behind the activation.

Challenge

The Problem

The scale was the problem. The festival drew more than 300,000 people across two weekends, and the experience had to run on whatever phone a visitor already had, on a crowded and unreliable festival network, and stay readable outdoors in direct sunlight. On the brand side, every partner had its own prize allocation that could not be exceeded, while stands moved quickly and had no time for manual checking.

Solution

The AR was built on 8th Wall, so it ran straight in the browser on a visitor's own phone with no app to install. The interface was built in React, Next.js and Tailwind CSS, with a Go backend validating redemptions in real time per brand per stand, so the number issued never exceeded the agreed allocation. Each partner also had a live analytics dashboard showing their own engagement and redemption figures while the event was still running.

KeyFeatures

[01]

AR Treasure Hunt

Visitors moved through the festival site finding digital items in AR, straight from the browser on their own phone with nothing to install.

[02]

Validated Prize Redemption

Collected items were exchanged at partner stands, validated in real time per brand per stand so the number issued never exceeded the agreed allocation.

[03]

Per-Brand AR Content

Each partner appeared with its own content on one shared platform, from NIVEA sunscreen samples to Hyundai merchandise and virtual test drives.

[04]

Live Analytics Dashboard

Partner brands saw their own engagement and redemption figures while the event was running, rather than waiting for a report afterwards.

[05]

Built for Field Conditions

Ran on the phones visitors already carried, on a congested festival network, and stayed readable in direct sunlight.
