Modernising a VR Platform for Elderly Care Homes in the Netherlands, with Cipta Dua Saudara and Stellar Inti Studio

EldersVR is a virtual reality platform run by Hack The Planet, a Dutch non-profit foundation, used to counter isolation among older people. Residents can take a walk in nature, ride a boat through Amsterdam, join a movement class or sing together, all from inside a care home. Javapixa modernised the platform with Cipta Dua Saudara and Stellar Inti Studio, moving an ageing VR codebase onto current Unity3D and Pico hardware.

Challenge

The Problem

The platform was first built in 2017 and is still in daily use in care homes. What had aged was the technology, not the need for it: an old engine version, old SDKs, and headsets no longer sold. The work had to bring all of it onto current Unity3D and the Pico SDK without changing the experiences residents already recognised, and without adding anything new for care staff to learn.

Solution

The codebase was migrated to current Unity3D in C#, then integrated with the Pico SDK and VR SDK so it runs on Pico hardware that is still in production. The four experience themes residents already know, calm walks, Amsterdam boat tours, movement classes and group singing, were kept as they were. Comfort, visual clarity and physical safety for elderly users were treated as design constraints rather than final polish, as was keeping the operator flow simple enough not to add to staff training.
